Artist's Description

Curcuma Ginger

Curcuma gingers are called hidden lilies because the inflorescences of some of the 40 or so species are obscured by foliage. One Curcuma that doesn't hide its beautiful blossoms is the pink-flowered jewel of Thailand, a winter-dormant, rhizomatous plant that dies to the ground January through March, before reappearing in spring.

This lovely ginger grows about 2 feet tall in light-to-moderate shade on organically enriched, mulched sites that are kept moist during the growing season. Its eye-catching inflorescences are displayed from late spring to late autumn. According to reports, this Curcuma thrives along shaded edges of ponds. Jewel of Thailand, generally listed as C. cordata, is sometimes available locally, and plants and rhizomes are frequently sold online.
